We interviewed Rhys Beynon-Thomas, a Practice Director at ProStock Vets about the current challenges facing farmers on the ground and how we can all play our part.
From the farm yard to the board room Rhys says teamwork is key because together we can do great things, all we’ve got to do is communicate.
What do you find the most challenging part of your role as a Farm Vet in Wales?
Probably, the public’s perception of livestock farming. There is a lack of understanding about the pivotal role Welsh farmers play in putting food on our plates and the challenges they go through to do so. As a farm vet I feel a sense of duty to stand up for farmers when they’re not in the room.
What do you find the most rewarding aspect of your position?
Improvements, 100%. When you stand side by side with a farmer who you’ve supported to make changes to their farming approach and the results show that their hard work has been worth it. Sometimes it feels like a never ending battle but when the wins come in, there’s no better feeling for everyone involved.
How do you see the role of the Farm Vet in the ever-changing nature of the sector?
Moving towards a preventative service rather than emergency is where I see it going. Farming in the future must be collaborative in my opinion, its about sharing advice and education to plan for the future as much as possible. It will be an exciting career for those looking to make a real difference to farmers, their businesses and wider society.
What do you foresee the future of Bovine TB to look like?
We need to keep going. We need to keep investigating every possible avenue including wildlife sectors and not stop until we find a solution. We also need to clearly communicate our investigatory learnings and distill what this means for everybody, collectively.
If you were to give one piece of advice to an aspiring vet, what is it?
If you’re looking to work with a community of like-minded people who are passionate about making improvements – veterinary is the perfect career for you. The people, their relentless passion and determination is what’s always inspired me and still does, every day.
What inspires you to do more than just your role as a Practice Director?
For me it’s about playing your part, we’re all one team – vets and farmers. My upbringing on the farm instilled the sense of teamwork within me and an understanding of the tough job farming is. By helping each other, we’re helping the industry and the bigger picture. My belief is that if you can help, you should.
How do you unwind from working in veterinary?
In the past it was always playing in my local Rugby team. Nowadays it’s all about family time front and centre and watching Rugby from the side lines.
